WHY MINDFULNESS PRACTICES?

Introducing yoga and mindfulness practices to the workplace and schools has become increasingly popular in recent years. Studies have shown that incorporating these practices for just a short amount of time into your week increases energy, relieves stress, improves concentration and even boosts morale. When we take the time to slow down and are given tools to help us react differently to our stresses; we can begin to make lasting change that benefits not only our personal lives but our work efforts and productivity.

    My Personal Experience from teaching yoga in classrooms.

    Before I began teaching to younger students I was unaware of the major stress they are under. Young adults and children actually seem to have an extremely high stress level almost comparable to that of adults with full time jobs and serious financial responsibilities. Walking into the classroom and hearing 11-13 year olds chatting diligently about how stressed they were caught me off guard. I was shocked at how those who are so young and vibrant could be so bogged down by extreme stress. Between homework, home life, after school activities, college entry, social life and the increasing pressure of social media resting upon their shoulders this created a perfect storm. Bringing yoga and mindfulness practices to the classroom is an amazing way to teach tools at a young age on how to cope with daily stress in a healthy way. These are lifelong tools that can be utilized and shared forever.

    The students reported after yoga that they were:

    • Feeling more relaxed

    • Feeling less stressed

    • Feeling more focused

    • Feeling noticeably less nervous before an exam

    • Enjoying being taught to remember to breathe

    • Feeling physically strong
